Anyone on the New Year’s Eve train? I think I live on it! For some reason, I have always looked forward to partying on New Year’s Eve. Such fond memories include:
1998- my friends and I left our winter coats in the car so we didn’t have to bring them into The Rainbow Room- downtown Chicago. Someone came along and broke the window and stole our coats. We had to drive back to the suburbs sitting in shattered glass and freezing on the expressway.
1999- freezing again in Chicago! My friends and I had to stand on a street corner waiting for a bus to take us to back to Midway Airport b/c the “L” shut down before midnight. I was in platform heels and a dress. MISERABLE
2000- played it smart at a friend’s house, but watched as the ball dropped in NYC and hoped the tv didn’t blow up b/c of Y2K!
After that I continued to party more moderately, and stick to friends’ homes rather than downtown Chicago nightlife. So as this glorious party night of all nights approaches- what are your plans?
We are having a huge party, and I was thinking of having a raffle every hour with a prize for one of the attendees. Also! Having a New Year’s Resolution Table where people write down their resolutions on a piece of paper and seal it in a self-addressed envelope. I will then mail the letters back to them in 6 months to make sure they are on track.
An essential item to any party these days is a candy table. While we all feel like we are going into sugar shock from Christmas cookies, it is a great way to end the year!
Happy New Year everyone! Here’s to a fabulous 2012!

What could be better than enjoying delicious peppermint sticks during the holiday season? Enjoying delicious peppermint sticks IN SANTA’S WORKSHOP!
We took our kids up North to Greer, AZ for a memorable family adventure. Up near the White Mountains is a lovely place where Santa Claus has hidden one of his workshops. Hosted by friendly elves, this is a child’s dream. You are greeted by Alibaster, the head elf, who welcomes you into the toy hall of fame- are you picturing the very first big wheel ever made?
The children are then lead into the workshop where they build toys with the elves- teddy bears, rocket shooters, and other fun items. At break time, the kids have cookies and hot cocoa with the elves while singing Christmas songs. Moving on into Elf University for a lesson in toy construction, and finally over to Santa’s private office to write a letter about what they want for Christmas just before meeting the big man himself! Pose for a picture with Santa and the family, and hop back on the trolley to get back home.
I highly recommend the trip- sans snow storm we ran into! Driving through a complete “white-out” reminds me of childhood back in Chicago. LOVE Chicago. Do NOT love blizzards trapping me in the house.
The “Experience” does have a few kinks to work out. At one point we were all bottle-necked in Santa’s private office while waiting our turn to see him. Forty-five minutes in a congested room with screaming children (ours being two of them) was something we could have done without. Our 22 month old decided to sneak into the elf’s locker room, and smash all the peppermint sticks so he could eat them! A bump in the road you might say.
But in the end, when we asked our kids if they enjoyed themselves, they replied, “I can’t believe we got to meet Santa Himself!” Ok- enough said.
Merry Christmas!

Here's what I have done:
Cutting down a Christmas Tree: I have done this 2 different ways.
First, I bought a $15 permit at Big 5 Sports store and drove up north to the open forests of Apache Sitgreaves. Yet, it took my family about 8 HOURS to find a tree we would actully consider taking home. I was very disillusioned by the movie "Christmas Vacation" in thinking the perfectly shaped tree would be waiting for me in a meadow with the sun shining down on it. That didn't happen. It was a fun experience, but perhaps if you have the expectation of taking home a Charlie Brown-type of Christmas tree you won't be disappointed!
Second, we tried a Christmas tree farm to guarantee the perfect tree and we still chop it down… though for $80 it wasn't the perfect tree, and we paid $80. I'll keep you posted if I find the perfect spot for this adventure!
The Polar Express in Williams, AZ: totally awesome experience. My kids were 3 and 5 and loved it. I even got choked up when my little girl stood shell-shocked as Santa handed her the infamous Polar Express Christmas Bell. We drank hot cocoa, ate cookies, and enjoyed the train ride- perfect amount of time for small kids.
The Ritz Carlton Christmas Teddy Bear Tea with Santa: expensive, but fun! I did feel like we were being rushed through the meal and onto the activities, but with little ones you have to keep moving! The food was great, a life-size teddy bear walked around for pictures during the lunch, and then Mrs. Claus read a story to the kids after lunch. There was a short puppet show, and then Santa was available for pictures. I would recommend you try it!
The McCormick Stillman Railroad Park: Imagine taking a 5-7 minute train ride through Christmas lights and beautiful decorations! So pretty- but best viewed at night so bring something warm to wear on the train. Tickets are only $2 per person ages 3 and up. Well worth the money, and again, so beautiful!
Zoo Lights: Every year I go, and every year I am honestly not as thrilled as I had hoped I would be. It is VERY over crowded (which doesn't make for a happy husband), and I always think they should have more lights, more entertainment- just more. Tickets range $8-$12 depending on if you are a zoo member or not, but you can get a$1 discount if you buy the tickets at Fry's grocery store.
DC Ranch Market Street Christmas Tree Lighting: totally free! Bonus right? They have music, gingerbread cookies to decorate, hot cocoa to drink, and all the pretty lights of the Christmas tree- very fun!
Kierland Commons Christmas Tree Lighting: Kierland is so pretty with the decorations, but the Christmas tree lighting was a bit anticlimactic. There was going to be "snow" and the "snow" was released from 2 or 3 small machines hanging off the palm trees and it turned out to be soap. My 4 year old was even unimpressed! Now Mrs. Claus did read a story with child participation- which was great! And the carriage rides were all my daughter wanted to do- though I am not lying when I say we waited in line for TWO HOURS for a 3 minute carriage ride around the center of Kierland. But- it was all free so you do what you gotta do for entertainment I guess! Next year just be the first one in line for the carriage ride eh? Oh and don't forget to wait in the even LONGER line for a photo with Santa- you have to pay for that one though.
The Scottsdale Promenade Christmas Celebration: located right outside Nordstrom Rack in North Scottsdale, they have carolers, carriage rides, and photos with Santa. All is free except for your purchased photo with Old Saint Nick. Again, it is the line waiting that kills.
The Nutcracker Ballet: Dying to go to this! I have a friend who has taken her 7 year old for the past 3 or 4 years, but I am still on the fence about spending the money if my kids won't even sit through it. So we are going after this one in 2011.
I've saved the best for last. I have not yet done this either, but next year I am signing up early! THE NORTH POLE EXPERIENCE! Kids get to have a hands-on adventure in Santa's Workshop! You can stay overnight and have the whole experience in a cabin with dinner included. Seems pricey at $74/adult and $62/kid, but what don't we do for our kids?
In the meantime readers, Southwest Candy still has Tootsie Roll Candy Cane Pops and Christmas Mini Dots on sale! So fill up your stockings with our candies to make your holiday even sweeter!

Here is the yummy Double Chocolate Peppermint Crunch Cookies recipe! Enjoy!
- 2 1/2 cups bittersweet chocolate chips (do not exceed 61% cacao; 15 to 16 ounces), divided
- 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 1/4 cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
- 2 large eggs
- 4 candy canes or 16 red-and-white- striped hard peppermint candies, coarsely crushed
Preheat oven to 375°F. Line 2 large rimmed baking sheets with parchment paper. Stir 2 cups chocolate chips in medium metal bowl set over saucepan of simmering water until melted and smooth. Measure 2/3 cup melted chocolate; transfer to small metal bowl and reserve for drizzling.
Whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, espresso powder, and salt in medium bowl. Using electric mixer, beat butter in large bowl until creamy. Add sugar and both extracts; beat until smooth. Add eggs; beat to blend. Beat in melted chocolate from medium bowl. Add dry ingredients; beat just to blend. Stir in remaining 1/2 cup chocolate chips. Measure 1 level tablespoonful dough; roll dough between palms to form ball. Place on prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining dough, spacing cookies 1 1/2 inches apart.
Bake cookies until cracked all over and tester inserted into center comes out with large moist crumbs attached, 8 to 9 minutes. Cool cookies on baking sheet 5 minutes. Transfer cookies on parchment paper to racks to cool completely.
Re-warm reserved 2/3 cup chocolate over small saucepan of simmering water. Using fork, drizzle chocolate over cookies. Sprinkle crushed candy canes over, arranging some pieces with red parts showing. Chill just until chocolate sets, about 20 minutes. DO AHEAD: Can be made 3 weeks ahead. Store airtight in freezer. Bring to room temperature before serving.

Yet another idea I wish I had thought of first! My niece's went to a great party where they used Christmas ornaments kinda like Easter Eggs. The hosts hid ornaments all over the front and back yard and let the kids run wild looking for them! Some of the ornaments were huge and some smaller, but all had great colors and will be a spectacular addition to any holiday decor!
Don't forget about candy as a little added reward when the kiddos find the ornaments! Southwest Candy still has a wonderful variety of festive candy for your event!
