It’s that time again, where we head out to the candy aisles, looking for the bargains on what to give out for our lil goblins. I don’t know about you but when I’m on the hunt for candies, I’m looking for inexpensive, healthy (lol that is a hard one to swallow when it comes to the subject) and quantity. I mean really if I’m going to get stuck with any leftovers I want to make sureI LIKE THEM! But there is some serious thinking involved in picking out Halloween candy. I do have friends that are going to get the latest and greatest candy that the kids are going to go nuts about! Ok so call me selfish, I’m getting stuff I love. But maybe I will try to be somewhat healthy and offer fruit gummies or fruit roll-ups. Or better yet, maybe to save both of us, I’ll just hand out the Halloween-themed pencils,,,
Wait what am I thinking, No way why would I do something so foolish,,,Southwest candy here comes my order….Tootsie Roll Pops, Farley’s Chewy Caramels

We all know candy is delicious to eat, but how did some of them get their strange names? Take a peek to find out about the the history of candy names!! Ooohhhhhh!
Life Savers – In 1912, a man named Clarence Crane realized that the sale of candy in the summer didn’t do very well because the soft chocolate always seemed to melt.
So Clarence Crane invented a better “summer candy” that wouldn’t melt. At this time, ships were starting to use round life preservers, and Crane’s new little mints were round and had holes in them, so he thought a clever name for his new summer candy would be “Crane’s Peppermint Life Savers” His Pep-O-Mint flavor was the first to arrive on the scene. It wasn’t until 1924 that he started making fruit flavored ones, but they were solid discs with no holes in the middle. Finally in 1929, the fruit flavored ones started to have holes and by 1935, the five flavors that we know and love today were added to form the Five Flavor Life Savers Roll.
Milk Duds – When the first Milk Duds were made in 1928, the idea was to make them perfectly round. No matter how hard the manufacturer tried, they couldn’t make them round so they decided to call them duds. The milk part comes from the large amount of milk they use to make this delicious candy.
Tootsie Rolls -The Tootsie Roll was invented by Leo Hirshfield in 1896. He named the candy after his 5 year old daughter whose nickname was Tootsie.
M&M’s – The name comes from the last name of the two founders. Mars and Murrie.
Snickers – Snickers was named after the Mars family’s favorite horse.
Just a bit of trivia to impress your friends with at your next party!

We are going to start carrying individual color Whirly Pops:
red and white, pink and white, and blue and white. But what do you all think about black and white? These lollipops are 3inches in diameter and come on a long, thick, white stick- so great for candy bouquets and party favors!
You can wrap each with cellophane, and plop a round, white sticker on the front to personalize each of them for a party or fundraiser event.

On Halloween in Des Moines, Iowa, you can't just ring a doorbell and expect to get candy like at most homes across the United States. You have to EARN it- with a joke. That's right! Des Moines has hosted this tradition of "Beggar's Night" (the night before Halloween) for many years, and it was originally started to prevent vandalism on Halloween night. Well it stuck. So now children in the city as well as the suburbs trek around town in their finest of costumes on October 30th and go door to door telling jokes to get their candy. What a neat place the good ol' Midwest is!
