New Years Diet…seriously?

Ok really, I totally understand that the New Year resolutions bring us to reevaluate ourselves, life issues, money issues and health issues. I get it really, but seriously now and then we all get that “sweet desire” and I’m really hooked on the “sugar free lifesavers” And if you think about it the name itself is a positive step in the right direction. I mean really who can’t go wrong with eating sugar free as well as having a Lifesaver! Ya gotta try em!

Too Darn Hot for WHAT?

Yes I am originally from the East, and in the summer time we enjoyed the hot sunshine, running through the sprinklers and the cool evenings catching lightening bugs. Fast forward to ARIZONA, in JULY AND AUGUST, our hottest months, I’m trapped in the house. And if I dare have to go out to pick up the kids, grocery store shopping, or a quick errand, I bolt to the car with such ease and reach for the AC promptly! No doubt about it, IT’S HOT!

 Toodamnhottogarden
One of our customers just called to pass along their photo of their garden club, and yes you heard me correctly, Garden Club in Arizona! They are also in agreement with me! She is holding their monthly gardening party and has so proudly named  "It's Too Darn Hot to Garden." She purchased for the occasion, cinnamon discs, and placed them all around their tables! How appropriate, spicy, hot and a great time all mixed together with good friends!

Who's your candy?

HOW DID THAT CANDY GET ITS NAME???

We all know candy is delicious to eat, but how did some of them get their strange names? Take a peek to find out about the the history of candy names!! Ooohhhhhh!

Life Savers – In 1912, a man named Clarence Crane realized that the sale of candy in the summer didn’t do very well because the soft chocolate always seemed to melt.

So Clarence Crane invented a better “summer candy” that wouldn’t melt. At this time, ships were starting to use round life preservers, and Crane’s new little mints were round and had holes in them, so he thought a clever name for his new summer candy would be “Crane’s Peppermint Life Savers” His Pep-O-Mint flavor was the first to arrive on the scene. It wasn’t until 1924 that he started making fruit flavored ones, but they were solid discs with no holes in the middle. Finally in 1929, the fruit flavored ones started to have holes and by 1935, the five flavors that we know and love today were added to form the Five Flavor Life Savers Roll.

Milk Duds – When the first Milk Duds were made in 1928, the idea was to make them perfectly round. No matter how hard the manufacturer tried, they couldn’t make them round so they decided to call them duds. The milk part comes from the large amount of milk they use to make this delicious candy.

Tootsie Rolls -The Tootsie Roll was invented by Leo Hirshfield in 1896. He named the candy after his 5 year old daughter whose nickname was Tootsie.

M&M’s – The name comes from the last name of the two founders. Mars and Murrie.

Snickers – Snickers was named after the Mars family’s favorite horse.

Just a bit of trivia to impress your friends with at your next party!

Who's Your Candy?

Lifesavers Candy

Here at Southwest Candy we like to review our products and look at how they have changed over the years. One candy that keeps getting better and better is the Lifesaver.

Lifesavershave evolved over the years. The variety of flavors available and the textures even. From Hawaiian Fruit hard candy to assorted flavors in Gummie or Jelly Bean form. They even make swirl lollipops that are beyond delicious!

Lifesaver has definitely evolved. Let's take a look at moments from the past:

1973 was a very romantic time:

Circa 1984 was "upbeat" you could say:

1991 was innocent and sweet:

And the most recent commercial I found was this one!

So Lifesaver has obviously changed their marketing style over the years.  Which one makes you want to purchase Lifesavers? Write me and let me know….

Who's Your Candy?

All Candy Expo Starts TOMORROW!

All candy expo
Close your eyes and imagine a place where you can sample all the candy you want, AND go home with a bag of candy that you can fill until you can't fit anymore- welcome to Chicago's All Candy Expo. Its new name, is The Sweets & Snacks Expo- I guess they have expanded beyond just candy these days. Perhaps it is a way of giving savory treats some publicity? I'm down with that- salty foods need props too.

All the big name brands (to name a few): Jelly Belly, Tootsie Roll, Wrigley, Nestle, Hershey, Spangler, Charms, Brach, Farley & Sathers- they will all be there ready to impress the distributors with mouth-watering new candy lines. I remember going there as a kid and I was so excited to sample Reeses' Nutrageous before it even set foot out on the market!

So if you are a bulk candy/snacks distributor, a vending machine owner, or you're just plain lucky enough to get hooked up with a pass to go to the show, here is some advice before you go:

1- If you are a diabetic, bring some insulin!

2- Eat your protein for breakfast because it is carbohydrate city once you walk through the doors!

3- It wouldn't hurt to get in an early workout prior to going- it'll make you feel less guilty when you go home with a belly ache.

4- Bring a Tide Pen. You might get a chocolate stain on your clothes from sampling!

5- Bring the largest purse you have in your closet- might I recommend a Louis Vuitton Speedy 35?

The Candy with the Little Hole….

Lifesavers-candy I received this in an email forward:

The children began to identify the flavors by their color:
RedàCherry
YellowàLemon
Green—
àLime
Orange—
àOrange

Finally the teacher gave them all
HONEY lifesavers. None of the children could identify the taste.  The teacher said, 'I will give you all a clue. It's what your mother may sometimes call your father!  One little girl looked up in horror, spit her lifesaver out and yelled, ’Oh, my God…they're a_ _holes!'

The teacher had to leave the room

New Wholesale Lifesavers!

LifeSavers13 Have you heard the word on the street? There are two new Lifesaver flavors that just can't be beat!

Cherry Lemonade and Strawberry Apple are making headway as their popularity soars!  They are individually wrapped and packaged as 12- 6.8oz bags per case, and they are a great buy at only $.04/piece!

Unfortunately these products are NOT Kosher.

Both the Cherry Lemonade and the Strawberry Apple wholesale Lifesavers provide only 60 kcals for 4 pieces and have no fat or sodium. Diabetics can count them as 1 carbohydrate as they contain 14g of sugar.

The ingredients for both of the products are identical: sugar, corn syrup, maltodextrin, magnesium stearate, citric acid, malic acid, natural and artificial flavors, malitol, colors (red 40 lake, yellow 5 lake, blue 1 lake), and soy lecithin.

However! The Cherry Lemonade Lifesavers contain Aspartame so phenylketonurics need to be cautious of the phenylalanine.
