All Candy Expo Starts TOMORROW!

All candy expo
Close your eyes and imagine a place where you can sample all the candy you want, AND go home with a bag of candy that you can fill until you can't fit anymore- welcome to Chicago's All Candy Expo. Its new name, is The Sweets & Snacks Expo- I guess they have expanded beyond just candy these days. Perhaps it is a way of giving savory treats some publicity? I'm down with that- salty foods need props too.

All the big name brands (to name a few): Jelly Belly, Tootsie Roll, Wrigley, Nestle, Hershey, Spangler, Charms, Brach, Farley & Sathers- they will all be there ready to impress the distributors with mouth-watering new candy lines. I remember going there as a kid and I was so excited to sample Reeses' Nutrageous before it even set foot out on the market!

So if you are a bulk candy/snacks distributor, a vending machine owner, or you're just plain lucky enough to get hooked up with a pass to go to the show, here is some advice before you go:

1- If you are a diabetic, bring some insulin!

2- Eat your protein for breakfast because it is carbohydrate city once you walk through the doors!

3- It wouldn't hurt to get in an early workout prior to going- it'll make you feel less guilty when you go home with a belly ache.

4- Bring a Tide Pen. You might get a chocolate stain on your clothes from sampling!

5- Bring the largest purse you have in your closet- might I recommend a Louis Vuitton Speedy 35?

Candy Pie

Candy-bar-pie-l
What do we do with our left over Halloween candy….or in our house, the candy that I have slowly taken out of the kids pumpkin’s so they don’t notice their stash is getting smaller and smaller!  I found a great recipe online for Candy Pie!   It sounds so fun to make and would be great with Thanksgiving dinner too!  This recipe is quick and easy since it uses a store bought pie crust!  Feel free to substitute with a homemade crust too!

What you will need!

  •  40 pieces Mini Sized Candy Bars (of Your Choice)
  • Store bought pie crust

Preparation Instructions

Fill pie crust with whatever mix of candy suits you. It seems that a chocolate-heavy mix tasted best.  A good mix could be Snickers, Malted Milk Balls, Hershey’s Chocolate Bars, Nestle Crunch Bars, Milky Way, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and M&Ms. Don’t be afraid to fill it to the top, as the candy will flatten out as it melts.

Bake in a 350°F oven for about 30 to 40 minutes, or until the candy is melted and the crust is golden. The time may vary depending on your candy mixture. Once you remove it from the oven, let it cool for at least an hour so that the filling can set.

Cut, serve and get your sweet tooth on!  My suggestion would be serving with homemade whipped cream and/or vanilla ice cream would make this even more scrumptious- you gotta cut the chocolate with a cream!

Nestle Crunch Give-a-Way!

NestleCrunchCauseForPlayBasket According to child-advocacy groups, prescribed play for children is approximately an hour a day, but many children throughout the country don't have the proper play spaces to observe their needed play dates.  NESTLE CRUNCH and KaBOOM! believe that every child deserves a dedicated play space and has taken up the charge to inspire a "Cause for Play."

From March 7, 2009 through Oct. 29, 2009, parents, teachers, community organizers and anyone who believes in the power of play can enter to win a residential ready-to-assemble playground, $3,500 cash and the opportunity to help designate a $30,000 KaBOOM! playground grant to a deserving community.

Entry to win can be found on NESTLE and WONKA fun-size bags via a unique online entry code to use on www.NestleCrunch.com/CauseforPlay.  For every entry, NESTLE CRUNCH will also donate up to $30,000 to KaBOOM! – a national non-profit organization dedicated to bringing play back into children's lives.  Additionally, NESTLE CRUNCH is donating $70,000 to KaBOOM! to further their national mission.

Here are just a few ideas on ways to foster play in any community with limited resources.  For more ideas, please visit www.kaboom.org.  To learn more about Cause for Play, visit www.NestleCrunch.com/CauseforPlay.

Shoe Pile Race — Getting a big group of kids together can be piles of fun!  Ask each child to take off one shoe and put it in a pile.  Divide the group into two teams and conduct a race.  The first players from each team start by running to the pile of shoes and finding their shoe.  They run back and tag their teammates until the team to find all their shoes first wins the race!

Dress-up Trunk — Turn old unwanted clothes, shoes and accessories into a coveted dress-up trunk for kids.  While girls will revel in princess gowns, boys will transform into their favorite super heroes.

Red Rover — Red Rover, Red Rover, send this classic game on over!  This beloved game requires two teams to line up across from each other with arms linked in human chains.  In turn, each team calls a player from the opposing team over to try to break the chain.  If the player is successful, he can bring an opponent back to his team.  If not, he must remain with the other team.  The game continues until all players are on the same team.

Rock Garden — Rock gardens can be just as fun as real ones!  Once children select their pet rocks, they can decorate them with crayons or chalk and display them for everyone to admire.

Boat Race — Play areas with natural streams or waterways can serve as the perfect scene for boat races.  Download origami designs online and have children decorate their vessels before racing.

Three-legged Race — A little bit of string can be a lot of fun!  This classic game requires an even number of four or more players paired into teams of two.  Tie the legs together and the teams are off to the races, and the first team to cross the finish line without falling is the winner!

Hula Hoop Pass— An alternative use for the hula hoop can make for a great team game!  Two evenly divided teams stand in a line side-by-side with hands linked.  The person at the end of the chain holds the hula hoop and starts the games.  To win, teams must pass the hoop from person to person without breaking the chain.  The first team to successfully pass the hoop to the last person wins the game!
